Chapter Philanthropy and Service
Breast Cancer Education & Awareness
The sisters of Duke ZTA are passionate about philanthropy. Each October, the chapter hosts a Think Pink Week in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Over the course of the year, you'll find Duke Zetas:
Selling baked goods and t-shirts for our "Think Pink!" 5k in the fall
Cheering on the participants in our annual Pink Lid Yogurt Eating Contest
Smashing a beat-up pink car on the Main Quad for our annual Smash Bash
Duke Zeta Tau Alpha also partners with Duke Athletics. You will frequently see our sisters passing out pink ribbons at football, women's basketball, volleyball, and field hockey games.
In the past, our chapter has collaborated with Duke Football to host the Think Pink game against our rival school, UNC Chapel Hill. Prior to the game, sisters sell tickets to parents and community members at a discounted rate to raise money for the ZTA Foundation. At the game, players and fans wear pink and sisters hand out pink ribbons and shower cards. We look forward to continuing to work with Duke Football again in the future.
In 2012, we also unveiled a brand new Think Pink event for the fall semester: the Paint it Pink 5k! This pinked-out color run takes place on the East Campus loop on Parents' Weekend every fall. A big thanks to everyone who has helped to make this event a success!
But our philanthropic efforts don't stop there! We also hold an on-campus fundraising event in the spring to remind us that the fight against breast cancer never stops. One of our favorite events is our annual SMASH BASH in front of the iconic Duke Chapel. Our classmates, faculty and campus visitors got a chance to take a swing at our pink painted car last March and raise money for a great cause.
Service
The Creed of Zeta Tau Alpha tells us to "think in terms of all mankind and our service in the world", and the women of Duke ZTA have taken this sentiment to heart. Each year, our chapter participates in a variety of service activities across the Duke and Durham communities. These events not only provide us with the opportunity to serve our community, but also to spend time with our sisters. Here are just a few of the places and projects where our chapter has participated:
- Cooking dinner for patients at the Caring House
- Volunteering at Duke Farms
- Urban Ministries
- Crazies Who Care
- Ronald McDonald House
- Food For Thought
- Crayons 2 Calculators
In addition, many of our sisters have served the world through programs like DukeEngage. Here are just a few of the places that have been positively impacted by the sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha:
